The Archimedes’ screw is a machine used for raising water, (from a low lying body of water to a higher position). It shows the important inventions of Archimedes, a system which is is used in various applications such as mining, irrigation and agriculture. It has been used for centuries and is still used today. It consists of a cylindrical pipe and a helix inclined at an angle of about 45 degrees with the horizontal (its lower end) dipped in the water. The rotation of the device causes the water to rise in the pipe.
